Abigail could hardly keep the grin off her face as she skated onto the ice. This was her second game in the boys league, Abbey had always had a talent that was too good for the girls leagues. It wasn't that the girls weren't as talented as the boys, it was that no one supported girls hockey the way boys hockey was supported.
Abbey was better than most of the boys she had played against. At first her team hadn't want a girl on the team but then she almost single handily won their last game. Now everyone except Chris accepted her. Chis was an ass, he wanted to be everything that Abbey was. A great player, the center and the hero of the team. He was still captain but that wasn't enough. He wanted to beat Abbey and prove he was better than her. At the center line the other captain laughed when he saw the braid poking out from under Abbey's helmet, "So there really is a girl on this team." He smirked. "Are you going to cry when we beat you?" He asked. Abbey rolled her eyes, "No because we're going to win." He smirked even more if it was possible. "We'll see." Was all he said. The ref dropped the puck and blew his whistle. Abbey snatched the puck away from the gorilla in front of her and shot off down the rink, her team hot on her heals. They always had the same game strategy, if you have a clear shot shoot, if not run a drill or something else. Abbey thought that it worked well even though it was kind of stupid. ... As the game progressed Abbey had scored two more goals, ended up in three fights and in total had 10 penalty minutes. She wasn't the stray from a fight kind of girl. Chris was looking angrier and angrier as the game went on, Abbey ignored it. He was an ass. Just as the timer hit zero Abbey scored the game winning goal. The Bobcats had won 5-4. The team roared with victory, they were all skating towards the center of the ice to congratulate one another. Abbey was along the boards when something hit her. She was thrown against the boards, her head hit them hard enough to give her whiplash. Abbey hit the ice, her helmet cracked against it. Over the next few hours she drifted in and out of consciousness, everything hurt. Abbey couldn't bring herself to try to move. ... Over the next few days Abbey continued to black out, she was in the ICU for weeks. Finally she started to stay awake longer. Her parents were allowed in to visit her. "What happened?" Abbey asked, everything seemed fuzzy. Her parents glanced at each other. "Chris hit you after the whistle blew." Her father said cautiously. They weren't telling her something. "How long do I have to stay here?" Abbey just wanted to go home. Her whole body hurt. "Abigail," Her mother said hesitantly. Looking at her parents Abbey realized something had to be wrong. "What?" She asked. Her parents exchanged a look. "Abigail," Her mother said again. Her father continued on for her mother, "Abbey, when he hit you, you sustained some brain damage." He stopped and they looked at each other again. Abbey suddenly realized, something was really wrong. She couldn't feel anything from her waist down. She pulled back her blankets and looked at her legs. They were wrapped in thick bandages and attached to splints. "Abbey, the hit caused brain damage. You-your paralyzed from the waist down." The words didn't register. Paralyzed? For how long? "For how long?" Abbey asked. Her mother broke down sobbing, "Abigail, you probably won't get better." She cries. Abbey stared at them, she wouldn't get better. She would never walk again. Never play hockey again. Everything she had dreamed of was gone. Her Olympic dreams were shattered. ... Abbey was supposed to meet with Madison Davis today, she was also paralyzed like Abbey. She would help her start to a just to her new life. She had been given a wheelchair but Abbey chose to use the crutches. They attached around her elbows and had a handle that she held in her hand. Madison smiled Abbey when she came in, "Hi, you must be Abigail." Abbey nodded. "Madison?" They stared at each other for a moment. "You can call me Abbey." Abbey said to break the awkward silence. "And you can call me Maddy." She says. Maddy smacked herself on the forehead, "I am so sorry," She gestured to another chair, "Please, sit. I know how tiring it is to stand all the time." Abbey smiled with relief and sat down. She leaned her crutches against her chair. "So, can you explain why I need to be here?" Abbey asked. Maddy laughed "You're here because 'I can help'" She says rolling her eyes, "Like you meeting another person who goes through the same things you do is really going to help." Abbey couldn't help it, she laughed. Maddy smiles, "I at least know what you're going through." Biting her lip Abbey dared to ask the question, "How did it happen for you?" Maddy's smile froze for a moment. "Car accident." Maddy said finally, "My stepfather crashed the car, while driving drunk. He died and I got these." She patted her legs. "I had dreams Abbey, I wasn't so different from you. I wanted to go to the Olympics, I was the champ then." Maddy smiled at her, "You took my place at the top." Abbey stared at her. "You're the Madison Davis?" Abbey gasped. Madison Davis was the best female hockey player that Abbey had ever heard of. "I would be." Maddy said laughing, "I also know that we could still head to the Olympics." Abbey stared at her. "How?" She asked. Maddy smiled, "Come on, we're going to the rink." ... "Are you sure about this?" Abbey asked as a volunteer helped her and Maddy into the sledges. Maddy played sledge hockey now and she had convinced Abbey to learn to play. They pushed off into the rink, Maddy was thrilled to teach Abbey and Abbey found she could play sledge hockey almost as well as regular hockey. Abbey soon joined Maddy's team and became an amazing player. ... Three years later Madison Davis and Abigial Ridgeman were heading for the Paralympics.

When Dorothy had first arrived at camp Half-Blood she had had no idea who her father was, all she had ever known was that her mother hadn't wanted her, she had been thrown around from foster home to foster home, no one had wanted her. Dorothy had always found tat her name was ironic, her name meant 'gift from god' in Greek. It wasn't until she was eleven and had run away from her last foster home that she had stumbled upon a young man with with goat hooves. He had been surprised when Dorothy could see what he was. Dorothy had been shocked to learn she was a demigod and that Carter was a satyr. Dorothy was still waiting to be claimed, her father still hadn't decided to admit that she was his daughter. Dorothy didn't even have a guess about which god was her father. But then, she also reasoned maybe her mother was the god. That could explain why her mother hadn't wanted to keep her. Dorothy had given up hope that she would ever be claimed but that didn't stop her from enjoying camp life. She was good at sword fighting, archery, swimming, everything. Dorothy was better than most of the other campers at camp. The other campers said she should have been claimed by now but for some reason that didn't bother her. The others had told Dorothy that they could narrow down her godly parent a bit because of her appearance. Dorothy had silver hair and black eyes, so they told her that gods like Zeus, Poseidon and Apollo couldn't be her father. Dorothy was most likely the daughter of a god like Hermes or Hades. Of course whether they would ever claim her was a whole other story. ... Dorothy stared at the black phoenix circling above her, what the hades was it? It landed and turned into a man, he tall and the most beautiful man Dorothy had ever seen. "My daughter," He said and Dorothy somehow knew that he was correct. He was her father. "I am pleased with all you have accomplished." Dorothy couldn't find the words to speak. "I am Thanatos." He told her, "God of death." Dorothy whispered. He was her father? That's why she could tell when people were going to die? Why her hair was silver and her eyes black? "I never claimed you," Thanatos said gently, "Because I thought you would be happier with people not knowing who your father was, I didn't want them to fear you that way and for that reason." Dorothy could only nod. "Dorothy Muriel," He said, "I named you that because you are a gift from a god, you are my gift to the world. I gave you the second name of Muriel because I knew that the sea would call to you and I knew that your mother would have liked it." Dorothy's head snapped up and she growled. "What does she have to do with anything? She didn't want me, she didn't like me." Thanatos sighed, "Your mother did want you, she wanted you so badly but giving birth to a child of Thanatos usually ends in death. The woman who gave you up was your mother's sister." Dorothy just stared at her father. Thanatos didn't speak again but just smiled and turned into a black phoenix and soared away. ... "Dorothy?" Hearing her name, Dorothy looked up. "What?" She asked. Brandon son of Demeter stood before her. "Are you okay?" He asked, Dorothy turned away. Knowing who her father was had changed things for her. Her father was literally death. People would find out and when they did, she would be alone anyway. People already didn't like children of Hades, how would they feel about a child of Thanatos? Dorothy would be alone. Uriah was one of the youngest boys ever to have been excepted into the NHL, he had everything now. Every girl wanted to date him, every guy wanted to be his friend.
Verity sat alone on the grass, she had her violin and was scribbling down notes. Verity had never been that girl, you know the one with all the friends and boys fawning all over her. All Verity needed was her violin to be happy. Uriah was talking about his last game, surrounded by admirers. When he noticed a beautiful sound. He looked around and spotted Verity sitting on the ground playing the piece of music she had just written. Uriah had never seen a more beautiful sight, he knew Verity. She had always been friendly, but distant. Uriah had always been interested in Verity. She was different, she didn't care what anyone thought of her and she could play her violin like an angel. Uriah wanted to know more about her, every time he tried to talk to her though she would make some excuse and leave. Verity had secretly always liked Uriah, he had always been kind to her when lots of others weren't. ... "Verity." Uriah whispered, "You can't hide from me, it's too late. I see you." Verity shook her head. "Why would you want me?" Uriah pulled her closer to him. "Verity, you are perfect." Uriah whispered. I hold my hand out to Jesse, "Do you trust me?" I ask. His face is pale but he nods. "I always trusted you Lissa." He whispers. He hesitates then takes my hand, I take a deep breath and close my eyes.
We soar up into the air, this is where I've always felt at home. Here high up where no one can reach me, where there is nothing to stop me from ever coming down. But this time Jesse is by my side. I can't let him stay up here for too long, unlike me he can't survive with this little oxygen. I hold tight to his hand even though I know I could hold him up here even without having to touch him. I slowly start our descent back to Earth, Jesse's hand still clutching mine. We touch down and he looks at me. "I always knew there was more to you than it seemed." He said. "But what are you?" I shrug, "I don't know, I'm the only one in our family who can do it. That I know of." My brother stares at me. "Why didn't you tell me?" He asks. I sigh, "I didn't want to scare you away and crap." Jesse laughs, "So you can fly? What's scary about that?" I laugh. "Nothing I guess." Kim had always had a crush on Derek, though until recently he had been dating another girl. Kim's stomach had turned over every time that she saw Derek and Katarina walking down the hall holding hands. Katarina was a nice girl, which was the worst part of course.
Katarina was gorgeous, she had silver blond hair and emerald green eyes. All the guys wanted to date her for that reason, but Derek had been the only one who had truly had seen her for who she was. Kim had seen it, heard it, hated it. But Kim was sure that Katarina was out of the way, a year ago Katarina had witnessed her older brother Katran and twin sister Karina's murder. The killer had tried to kill Katarina too but she had stabbed him in the chest with a kitchen knife. Katarina's mind had snapped when she realized what had happened. Kim assumed that she now lived in a hospital somewhere. ... Kim was walking past Derek's house when she heard a terrible, agonizing scream. Kim looked up and noticed all the windows were open. She looked around and saw the lady across the street look up and shake her head sadly. Kim walked up to the door and gave it a little push. The door swung open and Kim stepped inside. "Hello?" She called. "Is everything okay?" No answer. Kim looked around the house, where had the scream come from? She got her answer as the girl, she decided, screamed again. Kim walked quietly up the stairs to the next floor. Kim peeked in the room she thought she could hear voices coming from. Inside Derek sat on the floor cradling a terrified looking Katarina in his arms. Katarina screamed again, "Get away!" Derek tightened his grip on the thrashing girl. "Katarina," He cried, "I'm here, your safe." Kim watched as Katarina dug her nails into her face until blood trickled down from the cuts. Derek pulled her hands away from her face, Katarina clutched Derek's hand until his blood ran down and started dotting the floor. Kim backed up and ran down the stairs and out of Derek's house. She sat down on a bench not far from Derek's place. Kim tried to blink back tears that were forming in her eyes. "Kim?" Kim looked up in surprise. Derek's best friend Tanner stood before her. "Hello Tanner." She said miserably. "What's wrong?" He asked. Kim sighed and told him everything that she had seen. Tanner listened as she spoke. "Kim, you realize that Derek doesn't talk about Katarina because it hurts. She only recognizes him, her parents gave her to Derek's family to look after because they couldn't bare to see her and have her not remember them." Kim shook her head. "I wish there was something I could do, I want him to be happy." Kim looked down. "And now I know that I will never stand a chance against her, I can't compete with that." Tanner watched her. "Kim, there are other people out there. Derek may like someone else but you can find someone else." Tanner wanted to stand up and yell, "There's me!" But he didn't. Tanner patted her shoulder then stood up and walked away. Kim sat alone on the bench for what felt like a long time (probably more like a minute). Someone sat down beside her. Kim looked up and felt her jaw drop, Derek was sitting down beside her. "Kim?" He asked. "Are you okay?" Kim took a deep breath and nodded. Derek looked uncertain when he spoke, "You saw me and Katarina, didn't you?" Kim felt her face grow hot and she nodded. "I know that you like me, I'm flattered but you need to look elsewhere." He said. Kim nodded again. Derek took another deep breath. "Kim, you're a great girl and I'm sure there is someone out there for you but it isn't me." Kim nodded again. Derek looked uncomfortable as he stood. "Do you love her?" The words slipped out of Kim's mouth before she could stop them. Derek turned slowly to face her. "I do." He said. "I love Katarina with all my heart." Kim just nodded. "Then that's good enough for me." She said. "I'm happy for you." Derek gave her a little smile and turned once more to walk away. Then he turned back. "You should give Tanner a chance." He turned and walked away. Kim staring after him. |
